Then, THE GRUMPY SAILORS is just the thing for you – ’cause boy, do I know you well, anonymous reader who will hopefully not only make a wonderful comment but will also visit The Grumpy Sailors on YouTube and watch their videos!

Anyway, TGS (which coincidentally also stands for The Girlie Show, 30 Rock‘s fictional SNL-like sketch comedy show) is borderline brilliant. That’s a big deal, by the way. With a perfect mixture of absurdity, insanity, and ‘stupid intelligence’ (I coined the term – right here, right now), these sailors are set for nothing but smooth sailing – and if their lucky, some pillaging. A little pillaging never hurt no one (other than the pillaged, right?).

The album’s incredibly solid, and I gotta say I love the production. The whole atmospheric, almost condensed and tight sound works for nearly all the tracks. I love that it’s a new feel for them. They’ve been recording since 1992 and to do something this astoundingly different, both musically and industrially, is great for them. I’ll even say it’s healthy.

I also touched briefly on what they’re doing to the industry. The whole online distribution, paying what you want for the album thing is revolutionary. Now, the band is looking to put the album out via a physical CD release (in stores) via Dave Matthews’ ATO Records (disclaimer: they sound nothing like DMB, for those of you who don’t know), and in December, will ship the deluxe edition “discbox” for sale now on their website.

10.0 out of 10 – Fantastic.

I’m Veronica.. a frosh theater student at BCA. I’m pretty amazing according to most people, but you can decide on your own.
Most people think that us AVPA/T people are dumb, but that is TOTALLY not the case. I mean, I may not have an A in math at the moment, but that doesn’t mean anything because I’m stuck in advanced math. When I’m not stuck doing work/dance/voice stuff, I usually like to eat, listen to music, text/IM my friends, and actually.. dance and sing.

Luckily, i have Jesus sitting right next to me. Well, well, well… Tina Fey. It looks like you have an amazing comedy series on your hands. That was Jesus. You’re welcome.

30 Rock is one of, if not the funniest show on TV right now. It has all the things that you want out of a comedy. It has sight gags, slapstick, political jokes, jokes that make you groan (while you secretly die of laughter on the inside) and more. I can honestly say that i have watched episodes a second time, and noticed little jokes that i had missed.

Excuse me, but i digress. From what you ask? Hmmmmm… Good point anonymous reader! Uhhhh…

So then… back to 30 Rock. Tonight is the season premiere. For those that haven’t watched before, I demand you watch. Its like SNL minus the Live.

For all of you fans who can’t wait for the show tonight all i can say is:

Since I don’t know where to begin, I’ll just start with some background info:

The 2007 MTV Video Music Awards aired September 9th, 2007 at 9PM.

Scheduled performers included: Timbaland, 50 Cent, Akon, Cee-Lo, Chris Brown, Common, Fall Out Boy, Foo Fighters, Nelly Furtado, Gym Class Heroes, Daniel Merriwether, Rihanna, Mark Ronson, Soulja Boy, T-Pain, Kanye West, Alicia Keys, Adam Levine, Mastodon, Serj Tankian, Josh Homme, and, yes, Britney Spears.

Live from the Palms Casino & Resort in Las Vegas, Nevada, MTV was looking to rebrand, restart, and reboot the VMA franchise with this show. It had a brand new format, a brand new locale, an insanely long list of chart topping performers, and, most importantly, a shorter (by an hour) run time.

I might go so far as to say I was looking forward to these awards. I usually tuned into the VMAs to see whether anything crazy would go down, and this year, I was tuning in to see what I expected to be good. I, like 98.9994% of America, was also curious to see if Britney Spears could pull this one off. Americans love a good underdog story, and Spears was currently writing the underdog story of the century. Whether you love yourself some Spears or not, and I’m not saying I do, we grew up, matured with her and her manufactured bubble gum pop, and we all have a story associated with one of her megahits. In some way or another, I believe the entire pop-culture concious population of America was rooting for the girl to succeed.

Ahh, things were finally looking up for the revolutionary media outlet and the girl it fashioned into a superstar.

But… Something happened along the way to this “reinvention”. What the hell just happened?

Let’s just say it’s hard to imagine a much-needed rebirth for either parties (VMAs/B. Spears) after tonight, as much as I would like one for both.

The show stalled. I don’t know whether Spears was sedated, scared, or both, but I did not like it. Could this be the same girl who tangoed with a python 6 years back? She was lifeless, lacking charisma, edge, and personality. It was a tragic trainwreck – completely disappointing.

It was sad. Truly, truly sad.

The girl needs help. Seriously. It just isn’t funny anymore. She shaved her head, moved on, tried something out, and there is something blocking her from her former success.

Moving on, Sarah Silverman, as much as I love her, bombed afterwards. Immidiately drawing Spears into her offensive comedy mixture, she called out her defenseless children. Funny stuff.

Technical glitches ensued, and I was not feeling the new format. The suites looked like more fun than the center of the action – The Pearl Ballroom (mainstage).

Chris Brown is not a legend, and should not be introduced as such. Why didn’t MTV tell Ludacris he was, for reasons unknown, accepting Fergie’s moonman? Since when are the VMAs TRL, where we’re priviledged with 30 seconds of the performance?

There were some good one’s too. Kanye West’s entire set looked amazing 40 stories up, and what we saw left me wanting more. Justin Timberlake was pretty solid. His entire party (Timbaland, Nelly Furtado, 50 Cent) was alright. They were pretty happy with all his awards, so I guess that helped. Alicia Keys’ has talent. That’s always good at a live awards show, right? Mark Ronson was fantastic, but got even less screen time than the TRL-length performances. Rihanna did not lip sync, so kudos, Miss Jumping-on-a-broken-foot, who meshed well with Fall Out Boy in a performance of “Shut Up and Drive”. Fall Out Boy’s entire entourage of bands (all signed to Pete Wentz’s Decaydance label) failed to impress, however.

Even at an hour shorter, the VMAs felt longer than ever.

Britney needs help.

Sorry if this was rant-alicious.

It’s September 5th, 5:55 A.M. (totally unplanned, by the way).

If I were a completely melodramatic person, trying to infuse depth into every single event, I’d say this:

“Today is the first day… of the rest of our lives,”

Yes? It is, but rather than being all pseudo-sentimental or whatever, I shall offer a toast, so pop the cork on some fresh (no pulp for me) OJ, spread it around, and raise your glasses – high.

Here’s to a new year, filled with new experiences, new friends, new teachers, new struggles, new feelings of awkwardness, new things to learn (sorry), new clothes, new television seasons (it’s been a long summer), new music, and new discoveries. Here’s to sharpened pencils and solar calculators, three subject notebooks and a clunky Master lock with a combo you’re having a tough time remembering.

Here’s to it all.

This morning, I went to my local Starbucks. I got a coffee (I had to; it was early and I was tired) and some sort of breakfast sandwich thing.

All was good, but that is not what this post is about.

I sat down, and began to enjoy my pre-orientation hunger-satisfying mini-meal, and out of the corner of my eye, caught a small, nondescript box sitting on the counter. Well, I said to myself, I guess I didn’t notice it when I placed my order. It was the Starbucks-exclusive DVD of the recent SNL special, The Best of ’06-’07.

Being a huge SNL fan (I even like the crappy sketches), I got up and bought it. Right then and there – no hesitation.

Cut to 1:30 P.M. today. I’m home from Orientation, ready to eat lunch (which I also picked up from Starbucks – they can thank me for shamelessly promoting them later), so I loaded in the DVD.

Filled with deleted sketches from dress rehearsal, Weekend Update bloopers, and audio commentary by the cast (yes, I actually listen to those), I was happy. I watched the special with the commentary (which dropped gems of show trivia on my unassuming self) on and off periodically. It was, as T-Shayne, co-host of MTV4′s Deep House Dish, would say “rawsome”. For those of you who don’t watch, that’s rad + awesome, b’okay?

And then, the whole thing was over. I might go so far as to say my absolute favorite part of each and every SNL episode is the extended Thank You’s right after the host says goodnight – something you don’t always see, but can catch on iTunes episodes, repeats, etc. To me, that’s where I want to be.

I’m in AVPA/Theatre. Yes. It’s the truth. I don’t lie, just like A. Lincoln. That was him, right? Anyway, I like the whole theatre thing, I like film more, and TV is awesome, but SNL would probably be “it” for me.

Watch the credits someday. Imagine if every great “closing of a door, opening of another one” moment in your life was like this, sentimental music and all. Imagine if your last 4 minutes of the 8th grade was put to the goodnight music. It’s completely comparable. Take a look at the connections these people have, and since they come after an episode, imagine how much fricking fun this sort of work is. I love improv – probably more than any other theatre skill, and to be able to come to work, write like a madman, rehearse brilliant comedy, get little to no sleep, and then go on a renowned, classic, and relevant TV program and perform it for laughs is the epitome of great work. Did I mention you’re paid, and working in the greatest city on the face of the Earth? Didn’t have to.

Seriously, think about it. You might not be the frequent SNL watcher, but I’m sure you know how they kick things off each Saturday at 11:30.

Wouldn’t you like to say, “Live from New York, it’s Saturday Night”? Just once?

I would. For real. Frequently – As frequently as I watch the show.

Get the DVD. It’s honestly the best of SNL. They did a great job, and for beginners, it’s perfect. For $16.99 + tax, you can’t go wrong.
